If you are not familiar, New York is hosting the East Side Polo Invitational (aka the ESPIs) for 2010. Competition is scheduled to take place the weekend of June 26th somewhere in North Brooklyn. New York last hosted the ESPIs in 2007 and a lot has changed since then.
In 2007, all gameplay happened at New York’s home court in Manhattan, The Pit (factoid: the Parks Department named it The Pit, not the players.) This year, with 48 teams coming, New York Bike Polo is fielding three courts in North Brooklyn.
Paul Chunk, in charge of building the boards for the courts, estimates that they’re building somewhere in the neighborhood of 760′ of boards to make up the court walls. That’s a lot of wood to handle by the 26th.

I didn’t realize until last night/early today that there had been an error in the ordering button on the Tom Simpson page. Dangit! This is why I need interns! Anyhow, it has been fixed and all is well again.

Preparation for tomorrow night’s preSPOKE event is well under way.
Even if it is a school night, we strongly urge you to attend – because in addition to Sacha White, we’ve also managed to convince RIchard Sachs, Mike Flanagan, Jeff Jones, AND Peter Weigle to stop by!! (and Sachs will be introducing the screening of his documentary Imperfection is Perfection at 9:30p). Prepare to rub shoulders with a whole host of bigwigs from the bike industry who are in town for the BESPOKE exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design.
Rickshaw Dumplings will be onsite with delicious treats, and we promise that there will be plenty of beer and wine to keep the party going.
See you at 8pm.
NYC Velo is located Second Avenue between 3rd and 4th streets in the East Village.
Are you familiar with Alex Moulton and his bikes? You should be! Moulton, who just turned 90 on April 9th, was responsible for the suspension on the original Mini (the car) before turning to designing small-wheeled bicycles. Innovative to say the least, the Moulton bikes are a breed apart.

F Frame, MKIII. Note the front and rear suspension. The smaller wheels super stiff and the suspension serves to dampen road shock.

The two basic frame forms.

An early racing model.

A modern Moulton.

Amazing stuff. I love how the seat post is held.

The video details his design methodology and explains Dr.Moulton better than I ever could
